Subaru's are said by many to be the best AWD system in the world, and it is not hard to see why.
Subaru had 3 main types of AWD systems in the 3rd generation Legacy:
Active AWD This system is found in the E-4AT transmission, common on the 2.5L & 2.0L Non-Turbo models. Torque split is 90:10, up to 50:50. This system uses a MPT (Multi-plate transfer) setup which sends power to the rear axle. This system is more front-wheel-drive.
VTD AWD This system is Subaru's top AWD system found in the automatic E-4AT VDC transmissions and the newer E-5AT systems. This AWD system uses a centre differential with MPT... since there is a differential, the split is default 45:55, meaning traction is generally more substantial all the time.
Continuous AWD This system is targeted to the manual gearboxes, the 5MT. The viscous-coupling center differential simply splits power evenly 50:50 under normal conditions. When slippage occurs, the differences in friction heats the fluid which locks the slipping axle to the axle with most friction. This in-turn locks the diff in a 50:50 split state. This system is more re-active than pro-active.
(Pictured is the Subaru drive-train, note the symmetrical layout, there are no protruding driveshafts or transversley placed engine unlike competitors, this prevents torque steer and other factors that can affect off-road and driving performance)
The facelifted Subaru Legacy was introduced in May 2001, following an overhaul of fascia & mechanical enhancements across the range of Legacy models. Major adjustments to the models included a more 'new-age' looking front-end; with defined, bold headlamps, a more curved grille & bonnet, as well as a new front-bumper.
In January 2002, Subaru released 2 new models. The RS30, and the GT30. These 2 new vehicles took advantage of the reliable EZ30D motor and was re-tuned to suite a more sportier car. This was the first time that Subaru's EZ30D was put into a model other than the Lancaster. These cars became the flagship of the line-up as the 3L motor was looked upon as the 'king' of Subaru engines (other than those of the STi EJ20).
(Pictured is the EZ30D, launched in the Lancaster 6 in May 2000. This engine was used throughout the remainder of the 3rd Generation Legacy's reign which ceased in mid 2003)
The official product development video for the revised Legacy launched in May 2001.
Video includes the 3 product commercials and other development imagery, in Japanese.
In 2001, Subaru of Japan launched a '3-Keys Legacy' advertising campaign to help raise awareness of the newly released BH & BE Facelifted Legacy's into the domestic market. Starring in this campaign is famous singer / actress Jennifer Lopez. She starred in several of the commercials and other advertising media featuring the new vehicles. She also appeared on the website for 3-Keys Legacy which was online back in mid-2001 to early 2003, the website featured the model line-up, downloads, specs & press information... The actual website was hosted on this domain name '3keys-legacy.com'.
The main vehicles featured in the 3-Keys campaign were the Legacy Lancaster 6, Legacy B4 RSK and the Legacy GT E-Tune II. These vehicles are considered the flagships of the Legacy range. The RS30 while introduced alongside the new Lancaster 6 wasn't promoted as much as the Lancaster 6... Possibly hinting that the RS30 wasn't predicted to as bigger seller over the Legacy B4 RSK.
Jennifer Lopez's song 'Aint it Funny' was used in all of the commercials for '3-Keys Legacy', helping obviously promote the Subaru Legacy lineup with a highly acclaimed song.
(Pictured is a Japanese poster with Jennifer Lopez in front of the 3-Keys models. There are 3 variants of this poster, this one highlighting the Lancaster)
